Zoo Animal Learning and Talking

While most of our work focuses on the importance of acoustical design for human environments, our Principal of Acoustical Engineering, Erik Miller-Klein, recently contributed to the 2020 book “Zoo Animal Learning and Training”. This modality box explores the importance of understanding acoustics and animal hearing for zoo animal trainers, facility designers, and facilities staff. Through our research, for this book we found that acoustics is a safety issue for zookeepers, because elevated sound levels increase stress hormones in animals and reduce the staff’s ability to communicate with the animals. The book is available from Wiley Blackwell (https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Zoo+Animal+Learning+and+Training-p-9781118968536). We strive to design spaces that elevate acoustical design for people and animals.
